Get Involved

Indiana legislators need to hear from practicing family physicians about the issues that are important to your practice and your patients. Their decisions directly affect your life, your practice and your patients. The IAFP is a medium through which you can be involved in the legislative process.

Political Action Committee

Every year the General Assembly considers legislation that will affect your practice - scope of practice issues, public health initiatives, and mandates that take more time away from your patients. Contributing to the PAC does not buy a vote or guarantee a positive outcome at the legislature, but a strong PAC allows us to build relationships with legislators and have a seat at the table when these important issues are discussed.

Physician of the Day

Experience up close how our state government operates while also seeing patients inside the statehouse. Our Physician of the Day (POD) program allows you to observe the legislative process firsthand, meet your state legislators, and leave a remarkable impression about family medicine on the General Assembly. This is a low pressure opportunity as our POD volunteers are there to serve the members of the Indiana General Assembly. No lobbying is permitted by our volunteers.

Testify

As physicians you hold a respected place in the community and your opinion counts, whether the issue is scope of practice or public health. During each legislative session the IAFP seeks out members to give testimony on family medicine issues during committee hearings. If you are interested in providing testimony on a particular issue, please contact Cole Speer.

Write a Letter/Make a Call

The primary way the IAFP will communicate with you on legislative issues is through the IAFP Today email newsletter. At times when a key bill is up for a vote, the IAFP will send out information to you in an IAFP Today newsletter explaining the issue and how you can help, including making a phone call, writing a letter, or for local issues, attending a council meeting or town hall.

Speak Out

When we need local, state or national policy makers to hear from family physicians we may also utilize the AAFP legislative action center “Speak Out.” Speak Out enables you to easily send email messages to legislators and lawmakers on issues you care about. You will be contacted via email from the AAFP when a Speak Out alert for Indiana is available. Please make sure we have your mailing address on file, so we can correctly identify your legislative district. Contact Emily Bohannon with your updated information!
